NRC denies request to shut down VY

Wednesday December 1, 2010BRATTLEBORO — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation denied a request from Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H., that it order Entergy to keep the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant off-line until a number of actions have been completed, according to a letter dated Nov. 29.

Hodes had asked the NRC to prevent the plant from restarting after its latest refueling outage until the leaked tritiated water, found in January, was removed from the ground.

Some of Hodes’ requests had been implemented, including the tritiated groundwater remediation process, soil remediation and a root cause analysis from Entergy, and therefore were accepted.

On May 20, the NRC’s Petition Review Board stated that the “NRC did not find cause to prohibit the restart of Vermont Yankee” and denied Hodes’ request.
